Karnataka Govt. to Distribute Free Laptops to 2017 Enrolled UG Students
The Karnataka government will finally provide laptops to all 2017 enrolled UG students. The move to distribute free laptops to the UG students has been pending for two years as there were no bidders for the tenders.
Mr. Siddharamaiah, Chief Minister of Karnataka presented the annual budget in the state assembly for the financial year 2017-18. As per the 2017 budget, free laptops were to be distributed to the students who enrolled in various courses like engineering, polytechnic, medicine and degree courses in different colleges across the state (2017 academic session). However, the same has been lying pending for two years, as there were no bidders for tenders floated in 2017-18.
However, the Karnataka government will finally distribute the laptops this year. The Finance Department's suggestion has been forwarded to Cabinet to take a decision regarding the same.

The Karnataka cabinet on Thursday has given approval for the free distribution of laptops to SC trainees who are in the final year of govt.-aided and private ITI's for 2019-20.

The government also proposed a Forensic Science & Technology Centre that will come up in Bangalore at a cost of Rs. 20 crores. With an objective to overcome the shortage of specialised doctors in the state, the government announced in the annual budget that it would start new Postgraduate (PG) medical courses in government medical colleges.

The government also assured that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar School of Economics would come up on the lines of the London School of Economics. The annual budget also proposed the establishment of new polytechnics, particularly in rural areas and Raichur University. The government also made a certain allocation for the development of science and technology in the state. In the annual budget, the government also allocated Rs. 299 crore to Information Technology (IT), BT and Science and Technology Department.
The government will soon launch ‘Yuva Yuga’ to train 1,10,000 persons in animation, electronics, IT and other sectors. The government will also lay more emphasis on skill development.
