Karnataka Govt. May Reserve Over 50% Seats for SC/ST
Karnataka has decided to allocate Rs. 19,542 crore for the development of backward communities.
After looking at the diverse population of Karnataka, the government is planning to increase the percentage of seats left for the reservation category i.e for the Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes in education and employment. The percentage might go beyond 50 per cent.
The same has not yet been finalised and will be decided after considering the advantages and the disadvantages of the same with the help of legal experts.

Siddaramaiah, Chief Minister of Bangalore was addressing the people at 'Valmiki Jayanti' function in Bengaluru. He then disclosed that with 24.1 percent of the state’s population of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe, the state has decided to allocate Rs. 19,542 crore for the development of these communities.
He then pointed out the need to consider social reformers like Buddha, Basavanna (social reformer), Ambedkar, Kanakadasa (saint-poet) and Valmiki as global citizens instead of limiting them to particular communities.

He also mentioned that the prevailing caste system is the main reason behind this evil and one should try to eliminate it by spreading and creating social awareness while staying within the system.
The Chief Minister also said that 10 acres of land will be provided for setting up Valmiki Study and Research Centre in the outskirts of Bengaluru as a part of the developmental programmes for the Valmiki community.
