Karnataka’s IIT-Dharwad Inaugurated by Javadekar

Karnataka finally marks the beginning of the state’s Indian Institute of Technology, Dharwad. After years of trying to have one of the premier institutes in the state, IIT-Dharwad was inaugurated by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar on Sunday, August 28.

The inauguration ceremony was delayed because of the Kalasa-Banduri issue in North Karnataka. Many political leaders were present at the inauguration ceremony. The session for the first batch of the institute comprising of 120 students began on August 1.

Prakash Javadekar addressed the gathering and said that it was a moment of pride as a collaborated effort led to the beginning of an IIT in Dharwad.

He further said that IIT Dharwad will soon enter the leagues of the other IITs in the country. The HRD ministry will provide all the assistance required to develop the infrastructure of the institute.

A land of 470 acres has been provided by the Chief Minister of Karnataka, Siddaramaiah, for the institute. He hoped that the institutes reach the pinnacle of education.

Adding more enthusiasm to the ceremony, Union Minister Anant Kumar said that the institute will possibly be ready within next two years and will have a complete infrastructure by then.

Minister R V Deshpande was also present on the occasion and said that the state has always aimed at providing quality education in technical, medical as well as social genres. It was the determination of both state and central government to make this dream of starting IIT in Dharwad come true.
