Here is another demand to include Kannada as one of the regional languages for the medium of National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) 2017. Recently, the Kannada Development Authority (KDA) of Karnataka has urged the centre to conduct NEET in Kannada language. In a letter written to Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister, KDA questioned why Kanada cannot be included as a medium when six other languages are included apart from Hindi and English.

Six Languages through which students can appear NEET examination are -

  • Assamese
  • Bengali
  • Tamil
  • Telugu
  • Marathi
  • Gujarati

Prof S G Siddaramaiah, Chairman of KDA said that he has brought to notice the fact in his letter to the minister about Kannada not being included in the list of NEET's medium of language. Karnataka is home to highest number of medical colleges in the country and around 70% of students in Karnataka take their Higher Secondary examination in Kannada. He wants to ensure that NEET would be held in the Kannada language also. The centre's decision to hold NEET in six languages would affect the interest of the medical aspiring students of the state.

The Minister of State for the Ministry of Family and Health Welfare, Anupriya Patel, on 9 December 2016, informed the Lok Sabah that NEET 2017 will be held in six regional languages.

The Karnataka Examination Authority (KEA) on 12 December 2016 announced that the NEET 2017 would be the only examination for medical courses like MBBS and BDS for admission to different institutions in the state from 2017-18 onwards. This exam authority of the state had also prepared detailed information about the examination like – syllabus, question paper pattern, eligibility criteria and also the question paper of NEET 2016.
