Chief Minister of Kerala, Mr. Pinarayi Vijayan revealed that the admission to medical courses in various private medical colleges across the state would be made based on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). For this purpose, the state government issued an Ordinance based on the order that was given by Supreme Court that mandated NEET for all the states.

With an objective to regulate the fee structure in private medical colleges and ensure reservation for the backward communities, the state government issued Kerala Medical Education Ordinance 2017. Now, the admission to private and government medical colleges will be completely NEET-based. The admission will be made as per the merit and rank secured by the candidates in National Eligibility cum Entrance Test.

Admissions only to MBBS and BDS courses will be based on the NEET score and the government will conduct a separate entrance examination for the admission to other medical as well as para-medical courses.

A special Cabinet meet was held on April 11, 2017, and the Ordinance got the nod to promulgate. The Ordinance also received the approval from the Governor of the State. with an objective to monitor the admission process of medical and dental courses, An Admission and Fee Regulatory Committee will be constituted with the retired judge of Supreme Court or High Court as its Chairperson.

The committee will also have the representatives from the Medical Council of India (MCI) as well as the government. The committee will decide the fee structure of the medical courses as per the directions of Supreme Court.
