KIIT University Hosts World Space Week
- KIIT Bhubaneshwar is celebrating the World Space Week from 6th - 10th Oct 2017, becoming the first university in the state to do so.
- Satellite technology is equally contributing to the country's Digital India vision.
Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (Bhubaneswar), popularly known as KIIT University is observing the World Space Week from October 6, 2017, to October 10, 2017. Grand celebrations have been organised as a part of ‘World Space Week’ at KIIT University. The inaugural ceremony took place on October 6, 2017, in the presence of Honourable Governor of Odisha, Dr. S C Jamir. Founder of KIIT University - Prof. Achyuta Samanta, Director of Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC) – Dr. P. Kunhikrishnan, Professor Hrushikesha Mohanty – Vice Chancellor of KIIT University and Deputy General of SDSC, Mr. Ajit Kumar also graced the inaugural ceremony.
‘World Space Week’ is celebrated all over the world during October 4 to October 10 every year to commemorate two events: -
- The launch of the first human-made satellite Sputnik-1 on October 4, 1957.
- The signing of the treaty on principles governing the activities of states in exploration and peaceful uses of outer space on October 10, 1967.
KIIT University in Odisha is the first university in the state to host ‘World Space Week’ in collaboration with SDSC. The theme of the event is ‘Exploring New Worlds in Space’.
Delivering the inaugural address, Governor of Odisha, Dr. Jamir indicated that the Indian space programme has achieved many milestones over the past years. India is ranked sixth after the United States (US), Russia, France, Japan and China in the world in terms of satellite launching into low Earth orbit. He further pointed that the satellite technology is playing a key role in India’s endeavour to realise the vision of a Digital India. The Honourable Governor credited the achievement to scientists and technocrats of the nation.

Dr. P. Kunhikrishnan said that India has emerged as one of the leading countries in the field of satellite technology and space science. There was a significant growth in these fields after 1960. India’s only spaceport, Sriharikota has created a new era through missions like Mangalyaan and Chandrayaan. India is also the only country to launch a Mars Mission for the first time and to be successful in it in the first attempt itself. He also recalled the significant contributions made by the great scientists.
He further pointed that PSLV (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) is one of the most sought-after launch vehicles. India has achieved worldwide recognition by launching the satellites of 28 countries. He appreciated the Founder of KIIT University for establishing the varsity with a social cause.
Delivering the welcome address, Professor Achyuta Samanta pointed that hosting the World Space Week celebrations is one of the milestones in the history of KIIT University. He thanked SDSC for selecting KIIT University to this historic event.
The Governor of Odisha inaugurated an exhibition that displayed models of different satellites and rockets launched by SHAR and other space-related display materials. The exhibition attracted a large number of participants from different institutions across the state. The event went on for two days. The first day of the event involved the talks of eminent personalities on the space programme. Quiz competition for the school and college students, interactive session with ISRO scientists and video shows were also a part of the event.
Vice Chancellor of KIIT University also delivered his speech during the inaugural session. A large number of students were present during the event. Dr. Ajit Kumar Nath delivered the Vote of Thanks.
