In a bold step taken by one of the oldest women colleges in Asia, Bethune College in Kolkata has decided that they will be allowing the students to choose ‘Humanity’ as their religion of choice in the application form for the 2019 admissions. This step has been taken so as to allow the students who do not have an inclination towards any religion to choose Humanity as their religion.
As per the rules, the students were made to choose from either of the 8 choices that they had in the application form, i.e. Hindu, Muslim Sikh, Christian, Jain, Buddhists and others. After discussing the possibility of introducing Humanity as a religion with the admission committee, Principle of Bethune College, Mamata Ray, stated that even though the college does not believe a difference exists between religion and humanity, the option was necessary to be brought in for those students who did not believe in any religion.
