Principals of law colleges in Maharashtra have decided to set up facilitation centres so as to help the students appearing in the Common Entrance Test (CET) for the law courses. The move is aimed to avoid the repetition of the chaos that had happened during the admission time of law courses last year in 2016.

On Monday, 13 February 2017, several principals and representatives from government and government-aided law colleges of the state urged for a simplification of the entire admission process.

The principals also suggested to set up a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the admission process. It will help the students from multiple angles. Last year, when the state attempted to centralise its law admission process by introducing common entrance tests (CETs) for five-year and three-year LLB courses, both the students and exam authorities faced challenges such as -

  • Multiple litigations
  • Persistent delay of admission
  • Aspirants unable to get admission despite availability of seats
  • Enormous confusion

CET 2016 Inputs:

  • Out of 10,000 seats for five-year LLB course, 6000 remained vacant
  • Out of the 15,000 seats for three-year LLB course, 5,000 remained vacant
  • Six rounds of admissions were carried out

The CETs for three-year and five-year LLB courses, for this year, are likely to held on May 20 and 21. The exam will be held one month ahead of last year's schedule.

The facilitation centres, as proposed by the principals, will help the aspiring students in multiple ways like - filling the forms, depositing the fees amount etc. An official of CET said that the director of higher education will soon decide on the colleges that will serve as facilitation centres.
