Like IITs, IIMs Plan to Increase Student Intake

The government is planning to increase the student strength of the top six Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) across the country. The move comes after the government increased the student intake of the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

While giving the information, a government official said that three of the top IIMs are already in touch with them on this issue. They are awaiting responses of the other three IIMs. After that, the concrete plans will be firmed up.

The vision of the government is to facilitate a two-fold jump in student intake, though the exact details will be worked out only in consultation with all the IIMs.

Each IIM is relatively autonomous, unlike the more centralised IIT Council to direct future plans.

Each of these six IIM will have their own specific expansion plans, so they would expect from government funding and facilitation of land purchase, said another official.

Sources from IIM Ahmedabad say that they may need more land to augment its current infrastructure.

Every year 800 full-time students are admitted into IIM Ahmedabad. IIM Ahmedabad has been always considered the best institute for management programmes. But as per the National Institutional Ranking Framework list released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development this year, IIM Bangalore ranked as the top management institute.
