The controversy surrounding India’s premiere medical entrance exam NEET does not seem to cease. Only a week after the Kerala High Court ordered the Government of India (GOI) and Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) to hold counseling rounds until all the seats under 15% All India Quota (AIQ) are filled for medical colleges across the state, it has come to light that a Supreme Court bench headed by Justice Anil R Dave has announced status quo on admissions to MBBS and BDS seats in Madhya Pradesh after the MP government filed a petition accusing private medical colleges of not admitting candidates on the basis of centralized counseling conducted by it. Justice Dave issued a notice to medical associations, medical colleges as well as deemed universities to appear in the court against the contempt of court plea on September 19, 2016.

The Association of Private Dental and Medical Colleges of Madhya Pradesh (APDMC) had originally asked private medical & dental colleges in Madhya Pradesh to begin the counseling round basis NEET 2016 score from September 3, 2016. It had gone to the extent of blatantly threatening students that anyone opting for admission in medical or dental colleges basis centralized state counseling will be denied admission.

Naturally, the state government of Madhya Pradesh has alleged this as a ‘willful & deliberate’ disobedience to the directives of the Ministry of Health & Welfare government, which had stated that State/ UT Governments ‘may preferably’ go for combined counseling for admissions to MBBS and BDS courses in all medical and dental colleges including deemed universities.
