Candidates' academic qualification should be in the sequential manner of 10+2+3, the Bombay HC Aurangabad Bench said while hearing a writ petition filed before the high court with reference to last year's Maharashtra Common Entrance Test for admission to law programmes.

When the cases were filed, the court noticed that candidates qualifying the MAHA CET LLB did not follow the sequential order of their academic qualification, which means 10th Class examination, followed by 12th Class examination, subsequently followed by the three-year graduation for admissions to LLB courses.

The court has also directed Maharashtra State CET Cell, which is responsible for conducting the entrance exam, for correct interpretation of admission eligibility as per the Rules of Legal Education framed by BCI, which stands for Bar Council of India.

The following order has been laid down by Bombay High court directing the Maharashtra CET Cell:

  • For admissions in the law courses, applicants who have completed their 10+2 or have done their graduation/post-graduation through Open University directly, without having any basic qualification for prosecuting such studies (UG law programmes) are not eligible for the programmes.

  • In order to be eligible for admission, applicants must obtain the academic qualification as per the pattern of 10+2 for five-year integrated law programmes and 10+2+3 for three-year LLB programmes.

  • This means that candidates will not be considered for admission in law courses if their education qualification is non-sequential.

However, MAHA CET for admission in five-year integrated law programmes is scheduled to be held in online mode on April 21, 2019 and its application process will end by March 11, 2019.
