The Maharashtra government is planning to give 10% reservation in education and jobs to the economically weak. CM Devendra Fadnavis revealed that families whose annual income is less than Rs. 8 lakh through salaries, farming, the business industry, will be seen as economically backward.

The current reservation level in Maharashtra is 68%, and this figure is expected to go up to 78% after the EWS quota is granted. This decision follows the Centre’s latest decision of granting 10% quota to the financially weak from general category.

10% quota will be given by the Maharashtra Cabinet to those who are financially weak and from any caste or religion, in jobs and education, Sudhir Mungantiwar, the Finance Minister said. He further said this benefit will prove to be effective for admissions and job recruitments in educational institutes from February 1, 2019, onwards.

As per the data released by Fadnavis, 10% seats will be available for the economically poor in government services and educational institutes. Some of the experts claimed that this quota may not have any impact. Nawab Malik, the NCP spokesperson said the criteria for giving benefits under the government’s decision means 90% of the general category beneficiaries will get crowded in the 10% quota.
