Earlier, DTE used to carry out the admission process for engineering courses based on JEE Main score. However, DTE reintroduced MHT CET for engineering admissions in the year 2016. A total number of 3,97,768 candidates qualified in MHT CET 2016.
On the other hand, from the next academic session, i.e., 2017, MHT CET will not be applicable for 15% all-India quota seats. Unlike 2016, the candidates who clear JEE Mains 2017 will be given preference over CET candidates.

In the year 2016, Centralised Admission Process (CAP) was conducted to fill all-India quota seats. The marks secured in CET were used as a criterion to fill up the seats. The seats which remained vacant after CAP were filled on the basis of JEE score.
Ministry of Human Resource and Development or the MHRD is also planning to introduce single national-level engineering entrance exam. The ministry is figuring out the possibility of scrapping all the engineering entrance examinations. Currently, the proposal for introducing national-level entrance exam is under review.
