After the state witnesses a low performance by the students in the SSC examinations in Maharashtra, the Government has decided to increase the number of seats that are available in the Junior Colleges of Mumbai by 5% to 8%. Officials have stated that the approximately 60 colleges situated in and around the city of Mumbai, or the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) has been selected for the purpose.

Sources state that the step had been taken so as to combat the issue of the SSC Students being unable to compete for the seats as a result of their poor performance in comparison to the students of CBSE or ICSE, who saw a better performance and a higher score, which has lead to national board students to secure the seats in the colleges affiliated to Mumbai University before the state board students are able to.

The newly elected School Education Minister, Ashish Shelar, along with over 50 Principals from different schools at Jai Hind College, had met together to discuss the possibility of increasing the number of seats. Sources state that the meeting was planned before the Shelar was appointed as the new minister. A Principal of one of the South Mumbai College stated that they were aware of the fact that a proposal to increase the number of seats had been flying around. The Principal also added that there was uneasiness among the other principals regarding the addition of the extra seats, raising the doubt of whether the colleges had the infrastructure or facility to accommodate a few extra students. However, the principles were all in agreement for the addition of the more seats in the various departments of the Colleges, stating that the move will bring about a positive change for the students of SSC.
