Maharashtra Government to conduct entrance exam for Law admissions from this year 2016

The first-ever common entrance test (CET) for three- and five-year law programmes is going to be conducted by Government of Maharashtra for admissions into various law colleges in the state.

The entrance is being conducted for the first time and the department of higher and technical education does not even have an estimate of the number of aspirants. The state has also not taken a decision on the mode of the test.

Under the Maharashtra Unaided Private Professional Educational Institutions (Regulation of Admission and Fees) Act, 2015, enrolment in all professional courses in the state will be conducted through a common exam from this year. Since law also is a professional programme, all government, and private colleges will have to admit students only through the centralised process in keeping with the provisions of the Act.

Till date, admissions to law colleges were conducted at the institute-level on the basis of Std XII marks (for the five-year programme) and scores in the final-year undergraduate course (for the three-year programme).

As growing number of opportunities in the field of law many aspirants are taking the law as a career choice in the state hence government finally decided to conduct a CET exam from the year 2016.
