Maharashtra Govt. Scraps MHT-CET for Medical Admissions

The government of Maharashtra has finally clarified that it will not hold Common Entrance Test (CET) for medical admissions from the academic session 2017. Instead, the medical admissions will be conducted based on National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). As of now, the medical aspirants need not take a separate entrance test for MBBS and BDS admissions.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had passed an ordinance making NEET mandatory for MBBS and BDS admissions. Hence, the candidates who are aspiring for MBBS and BDS must take NEET. The centre approved the ordinance initially followed by President of India, Pranab Mukherjee.

For the academic session 2016, only government medical colleges conducted admission process as per MHT-CET score. However, all the deemed and private institutes took NEET scores into consideration for MBBS and BDS admission.

This year, the medical admissions in Maharashtra had run into chaos. There was confusion and lack of clarity over the NEET examination. The state government assured that 85% of seats are reserved for the students of Maharashtra. However, most of the deemed universities commenced the admission process without seeking clarity from the state government. The admission process was concluded on October 7, 2016.

Later, a proposal had been made by the Directorate Medical Education and Research to fill the vacant seats. However, the Supreme Court clearly indicated that no admission process shall be taken up now. This year, a total number of 2,078 medical seats are vacant in 83 colleges across the country.
