Maharashtra Govt to Take Students' Opinion about Setting Up Konkan University
The higher and technical education minister stated that the student’s views on the matter will be sought within the next 90 days. Currently, all the universities & institutes in the Konkan region are affiliated to the University of Mumbai.
On Friday, Maharashtra education Minister, Uday Samant told the legislative council that the views of students will be taken in account to set up the separate university in Konkan region. The higher and technical education minister stated that the student’s views on the matter will be sought within the next 90 days. Currently, all the universities & institutes in the Konkan region are affiliated to the University of Mumbai .

The education minister, while responding to the query raised by the BJP MLC Niranjan Davkhare in the Legislative Council stated that we will take into account the view of students in terms of setting up a Konkan University out of the University of Mumbai. He also added that even after the separate university is set up, the students from Raigad will still be affiliated to the University of Mumbai. He also stated that sub-centres for the university will be set up in Thane and Ratnagiri district, while a new centre will be set up in Sindhudurg district.

As per the concern raised by BJP MLC Niranjan Devkhare, there are over 800 universities and colleges which are affiliated to the University of Mumbai, accumulating a total of 8 lakh students. This may cause inconvenience to the students who are from Sindhudurg and Ratnagiri districts. Devkhare, bringing attention to his concern, stated that at least 20 colleges from Raigad district, 38 from Sindhugarh, and 45 colleges from Ratnagiri districts must have their separate Konkan region university, with the employment of latest curriculum.
