According to reports, Maharashtra HSC Chemistry exam comprised four erroneous questions that created confusion and students were not able to answer these questions properly. After verifying the errors in the questions, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Examination (MSBSHSE) declared that seven bonus marks will be awarded to students who had attempted these questions.

The HSC Chemistry exam was conducted on February 28, 2018. Students who appeared for the exam had reported that there were missing prepositions, spelling errors in the names of chemicals and other small mistakes that made it difficult to analyse what the question demands.

Following the reports of errors, a meeting of the chief moderators was called last week to arrive at a decision regarding the wrong questions in the Chemistry exam. The members of the committee recommended that the extra marks should be awarded to students who attempted these questions.

Talking about the errors, one of the moderator said that there were silly grammar and spelling mistakes, however, errors are not tolerated, silly or otherwise. Therefore students must not suffer due to these mistakes and must be granted 7 bonus marks. Those who have simply written the question numbers and left these incorrect questions blank will also be given the bonus marks.

Question 2 part 2, question 3 part 4, question 6 part 4 and question 8 part b had errors. Questions comprised errors like ‘Give two uses’ instead of ‘give its two uses’. Another erroneous question was ‘Calculate change in internal energy’, that should have been ‘Calculate internal energy’. These were simple mistakes but changed the entire meaning of the sentence, therefore, caused confusion.
