With the recent implementation of the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) Reservation quota taking place in various educational institutions of India, the government of Maharashtra has decided to implement EWS quota in all the programmes related to law and B.Ed programmes and colleges in the state. As per the notice sent by the Government of Maharashtra, the colleges and institutions will be asked to implement the quota from this academic year, even without increasing the student intake in those programmes.

Officials from the Maharashtra Government have stated that the decision was brought into force due to the pre-engagement of the top authoritarian bodies of these programmes in other issues such as increasing the number of seats and intake into the course of different colleges in India.

As per the statements that had been issued by the officials from the Maharashtra Govt. stated that the increase in the intake and the number of seats is up to the top authorities of the courses. They further stated that since the change will not be able to take place immediately, the government has decided that they will provide the reservation of seats to the students in the existing seats itself.

To this, the Vice-Chancellor of Bar Council of India, Satish Deshmukh stated that the council is not worried about the implementation of the reservation quota. He further stated that it is up to the government to select the number of seats that should be provided under the reservation category. He added that they worry about the curriculum and policies regarding these courses.

The implementation of the EWS quota has seen various objections and other issues, especially with the fact that the implementation of this quota will further eat into the number of seats that are meant for the students belonging to the general category. The Supreme Court had also rejected the implementation of the EWS quota in the PG medical as well as dental courses in the state of Maharashtra due to the major reason that the Medical Council of India had increased the number of seats in these courses.

Sources have stated that both the National Council for Teachers Education (NCTE), as well as the Bar Council of India (BCI), have not shown any interest in the implementation of the quota. Sources state that NCTE has shown no interest in increasing the intake in the courses under which the EWS quota will be implemented, BCI seems to not be in support of the implementation of the quota in either the three-year or the five-year courses, as per the words stated by the state Common Entrance Test Cell officials to the media.
