There has been a rise in demand for MBA programmes amongst the students of Maharashtra. Over 94,000 candidates registered for entrance tests in order to secure a seat in MBA courses offered by colleges in the state. According to experts, demand for MBA courses has increased after almost 5 years.

Maharashtra DTE has received 94,832 applications for MAH CET 2017. Experts state that the rise in applications is credited to clarity in the exam and better job opportunities on course completion. Implementation of a common entrance test for MBA admission by DTE has also encouraged students as they don’t have to appear for multiple exams to secure a seat.

Although the numbers have increased, the number of students applying for MBA programmes is not even close to the number of applicants in 2011.

Students are enthusiastic about preparing for management entrance exams. Coaching centres have also reported that there is a rise in the number of students willing to take preparatory courses.

Experts also state that competition could be tougher this year as the number of applicants is relatively more and the number of seats will be reduced. This year the number of seats will be close to 25,000. However, this is just an estimate and the number of seats in MBA programmes offered by various colleges is not yet clear.

Out of 36,948 seats, over 10,000 seats were left vacant in various management programmes in 2016. According to a report on vacancies submitted in 2015, 58% of b-schools had more than 35% seats that remained vacant in 2013-14.

Following this, many of the colleges have applied to the AICTE for intake reduction or closure. AICTE Western Region Director, Ramesh Unnikrishnan said that AICTE will grant the permission to cut down the student intake. The revised number of seats will be announced on April 30.
