The varsity had introduced CBCS for PG courses three years ago and reaped positive results. Therefore, the varsity decided to introduce the new system for UG courses too. The decision to introduce CBCS for UG courses was taken at the second general meeting of the Academic Council of Mangalore University.

One of the major advantages of CBCS system is that each course in a specific programme will carry a certain number of credits. For instance, two hours of instruction per week in a semester is allocated one credit. As far as evaluation concerned, one credit is equal to 50 marks in a semester. As per these parameters, the three-year Bachelor’s degree course will have 100/ 104 credits.

As per the CBCS system, each programme opted by students will have Group I, II, III and IV courses. Further details are elaborated below –

  • Group I – Core Courses
  • Group II – Elective Courses
  • Group III – Foundation Courses
  • Group IV – Extra and Co-Curricular Activities

The core courses in the CBCS system will have both compulsory and option courses, and students will have to study these courses in all six semesters. On the other hand, elective courses must be chosen from Semester I to IV. The CBCS system enables the students to opt for one elective course each semester.
