Marathi may be a compulsory subject in CISE & CBSE Schools up to Grade 10
- Marathi is a compulsory language subject up to grade 8 in the school run by the CISE and CBSE.
- CISE is a private board which organises ICSE examination across the country.
As per the reports, Maharashtra government is planning to make the Marathi language a compulsory subject up to grade 10 in CBSE and CISCE schools. The main aim of the proposal is to preserve the national language of the state. However, the final decision regarding this matter will be only be taken by Education board.
At present, Marathi is a compulsory language subject up to grade 8 in the school run by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations- CISE and Central Board of Secondary Education- CBSE. CISE is a private board which organises ICSE examination across the country.

Ramraje Naik Nimbalkar Legislative Council Chairman proposed state government to introduce Marathi till class 10 to ensure the Marathi language is valued and is preserved. This initiative will also help in the further development of the language. However, members of the opposition party showcased their discomfort and raised several other issues like making Marathi compulsory

Opposition parties have raised their voice for Marathi. The leaders of the Opposition mentioned that it is high time that we start preserving the language of the state. As more than 40% of the posts on the department are lying vacant and there is no full-time secretary in the Marathi language. According to the state’s officials, the language is being neglected by the government. As most of the ministers prefer to either speak in English and Hindi at various events
