MCI Launches 1 Month Foundation Course on Ethics and Communication for MBBS Students
1-month foundation course on Ethics and Professionalism has been launched by the Medical Council of India for MBBS students. As a part of the Professionalism and Ethics module students will learn about disability rights and etiquettes.
From this academic session (2019-20), MBBS students will study a course on ethics and communication.MCI has introduced a 1-month foundation course on Professionalism and Ethics which is a part of the new syllabus for MBBS course. As a part of the Professionalism and Ethics module, first-year MBBS students will study about disability rights and etiquettes to address the patients with disability. Teaching about disability rights is important to produce empathetic doctors.
Apart from this, MBBS students in the 1-month foundation course will also learn the local language to communicate effectively with the patients. The local language training will depend upon the geographical location of the medical college.
In order to address the shortage of medical faculty in the country, the newly appointed MCI BoG has approved a proposal to relax norms of Diplomate of National Board (DNB) holders so that they can teach in state medical colleges, AIIMS and PGI.
Medical Council of India has introduced a month-long ‘foundation course’ that will teach students the necessary skills, and attitude required for medical training. The course will have a special emphasis on professional and ethical behavior.
DNB Doctors who are trained at private hospitals that do not have medical colleges can obtain their postgraduate qualification from NBE (National Board Examination). As per the proposal, DNB degree holders working in super specialities private hospitals and specialities with 100 beds will be eligible for faculty positions after completing one additional year as a senior residency at any MCI-recognised medical college or institution.

MCI BoG Chairman, Dr. Vinod Paul revealed that the official notification regarding the same would be issued soon.
Meanwhile, the Ethics and Communication module of MCI new MBBS syllabus will be taught over several years, as the new course seeks to address the trust deficit in the doctor-patient relationship. The major focus will be on training students with regard to communication with patients besides teaching them.
