MCI Re-Approves More Seats to Medical Colleges in Amritsar, Patiala
After the MCI inspection revealed the mismanagement and lack of professors in Government Medical College (GMC) Patiala and Amritsar, the government promoted professors to regain the approval of 50 MBBS Seats.
The fears of the Punjab government washed away as the Medical Council of India (MCI) approves 50 seats in the government-run medical colleges in Amritsar and Patiala from the upcoming academic session of 2019-20 for running the MBBS courses.
Two government-run medical colleges located in Patiala and Amritsar previously increased 50 states in total after approval of the MCI in the academic year 2014-15 which marked the 200 medical seats in the government-run medical colleges. However, the approval was likely to be terminated as the 5-year inspection report stated multiple setbacks like infrastructural inefficiency and lack of staff. The MCI inspection team reported a total shortage of 77 professors which included 45 in Patiala and 32 in Amritsar. Seeing this discrepancy which is unfit for running a medical college, the MCI asked the colleges to submit a detailed report.
However, reflecting on the assessment compilation report sent by Government Medical College - GMC Patiala and Government Medical College - GMC Amritsar, the Medical Council of India again approved the 50 seats in the medical colleges.
The observation of the member of the Undergraduate Expert Group appointed by MCI’s board of governors was taken into consideration with the assessment of the Compliance Verification Report. The body also sought an undertaking by Satish Chandra who is the Additional Cheif Secretary of Health in May before giving the re-approval.
In order to fill the vacancies, the state government promoted some of the assistant professors to the rank of professors recently.

Even though the interview process for appointment of professors in ‘direct quota’ was underway, the government completed the recruitment process of the professors in promotion quota to fill up the vacant seats. Said Mr. Satish Chandra.

On the other hand, the PCMS or Punjab Civil Medical Services doctors association and Punjab State Medical & Teachers Association blasted the Punjab government in a protest for the untimely and unethical delay in the recruitment process and demanded the abolition the practice of appointing professors and associate professors in direct-quota and suggested to do the same in promotion quota.
