The Medical Council of India (MCI) has given approval to the Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Patiala which is run by the Gian Sagar Educational and Charitable, Trust to give admission to 150 students to the MBBS course from the upcoming academic session.
The first batch of 150 students will get admission from the upcoming 2020 academic year. Gian Sagar Medical College was shut in the year 2017 as the Government withdrew the essentiality certificate. Essentiality certificate is mandatory to run a medical college and the same was taken back due to the financial crisis in the trust managing the medical college.
According to the reports, new management took over the trust in May 2018. In 2017, over 1500 students of the medical college were shifted to other medical colleges in the state due to the essentiality certificate taken back.
Gian Sagar Medical College was given its essentiality certificate back by the Punjab State Government allowing it to re-introduce courses in MBBS, BDS, Bachelors in Nursing ad Bachelor's in Physiotherapy in July 2019.
Admissions to 60 seats each in the Bachelor's in Nursing course and Bachelor's in Physiotherapy course were made last year. The decision to reopen the medical college came after the demand of the locals of the area started coming in. The hospitals cater to the medical needs of hundreds of patients of nearby villages.
