533 Medical Colleges Offering MBBS in India: Health Ministry
According to the Health Ministry, there are 533 Medical Colleges in India which offer MBBS course. Out of which, 261 medical colleges are under private management.
According to the Health Ministry, there are 533 medical colleges in India which offer MBBS course. These 533 medical colleges include 261 medical colleges which are functional under private management, 436 medical colleges providing MD/ MS courses. Ashwini Kumar Choubey, Ministry of State Health and Family Welfare informed that there are 436 medical colleges in India offering MD/ MS courses.
He further informed that to increase the Post Graduate seats in medical colleges, the government has decided to increase the ratio of teachers to students for Professor to 1:2 from 1:1 for MD/ MS courses. The ratio for clinical subjects in government-funded medical colleges will be increased to 1:3 from 1:1.
Also, for the Associate Professor, the ratio has been revised to 1:2 and 1:3 from 1:1, if the person has been a unit head in all clinical subjects in Govt. Medical Colleges as well as in Private Medical Colleges within 15 years.
Meanwhile, the government is also in the process of upgrading state government medical colleges for introducing new PG courses or to increase PG seats. After the amendment in the regulations, it has been made mandatory for all medical colleges across the country to introduce Post Graduate courses within 3 years from the date of MBBS recognition.

MBBS admissions in India are done on the basis of NEET UG exam which is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) while the PG admissions are done on the basis of NEET PG entrance test.
