Medical Colleges Need to Submit Information on Requirement of PG Seats on Time: IMA to Centre

Indian Medical Association (IMA) has asked the Union Health Ministry to direct the government medical colleges across the country to submit the number of postgraduate medical seats available/required at the institute on time.

For this purpose, IMA has written a letter to Secretary of Union Health Ministry C.K. Mishra pointing that most of the government colleges failed to submit information related to the increase in the number of PG medical seats in their colleges. Therefore, IMA requested Union Health Ministry to direct the administrators of all the government colleges to submit information about the number of PG medical seats as early as possible.

IMA wants the government to intervene and direct all the colleges to avail this opportunity. The government medical colleges need to fill the requisite proforma and submit it to MCI or Medical Council of India.

President of IMA, Dr. K.K. Agarwal had written the letter to the Union Health Ministry. The reason behind it was that the government announced the addition of more medical seats in the annual budget to overcome the shortage of doctors at secondary and tertiary level. Around 5,000 postgraduate medical seats are expected to be created for the academic session 2017-18.

Responding to the request made by IMA, MCI and Union Health Ministry have directed all the government medical colleges to submit the information on the number of additional PG seats required.

Currently, there are around 18,000 PG medical seats at the clinical level in the country, which is not sufficient to overcome the existing shortage of doctors.
