Students aspiring to take up undergraduate courses in medical and engineering colleges under government quota seats in Karnataka might have to shell out a bigger amount as courses fees from the next academic session 2017-18.

Management of both engineering and medical colleges in Karnataka have demanded a fee hike to the tune of 30 per cent.

Dr. Sharan Prakash Patil, Higher Education Minister and Medical Education Minister met college representatives of Karnataka Unaided Private Engineering Colleges Association (KUPECA), on Wednesday, 23 February 2017.

Speaking after the meeting, M K Panduranga Setty, Secretary KUPECA, said that they have submitted their request seeking 30 per cent hike for the undergraduate engineering courses citing several reasons. Instead of doing the exercise each year, they asked the government to fix the hike percentage which can be rolled out every year.

The minister, on his part, said that he will have to discuss the matter with the Chief Minister of the state and later on come to a decision. Additionally, the management of the medical and dental colleges of the state have also been demanding a steep hike in course fees. Colleges claimed that the cost of education has increased everywhere and the state cannot remain immune from it.

He added that there is no uniform demand for the fee hike in medical and dental colleges. Some of the colleges have demanded exorbitant hike, whereas some colleges have sought nominal hike. The government has not yet discussed the matter, but will soon take a call in this regard.
