Meghalaya: 2 Universities Shut Down by UGC in Last 3 Years
University Grant Commission (UGC) has shut down two universities in the past three years. Find out about the two Meghalaya-based universities that have stopped functioning.
According to reports, the University Grant Commission (UGC) has shut down two universities in the past three years. Following are the two Meghalaya- based universities that have stopped functioning:
- CMJ University
- EILM University
As per the data provided by the UGC, these two universities were closed but the students of the students of EILM University were relocated to other universities.
Initially, both the universities were approved by the UGC and were allowed to carry out various courses in the regular mode of education at their main campuses. However, the universities were later dissolved after complaints started coming in.

The UGC states that the degrees acquired by students from either of these universities through regular mode are valid. Degrees offered through any other modes do not hold any merit.
These universities were shut down by the State Government of Meghalaya after various complaints were received, informed Minister of State for HRD, Mr. Mahendra Nath Pandey in his written reply to a query raised in the Lok Sabha.
The universities have contradicted the move and had approached the Meghalaya High Court regarding the matter, added the minister. The court, however, approved the closing down of these universities after finding out the various legal technicalities.

Pandey also added that the EILM University has not been functioning since December 2014. The UGC also released the list of fake universities currently functional in India. 23 universities in India are offering education without the approval of UGC.
