The examination pattern of Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MHCET) for engineering admission is likely to undergo few changes. According to sources, Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) received recommendations about making changes in the current examination pattern and syllabus of MHCET. The examination will witness changes on the lines of national level engineering entrance – Joint Entrance Exam (JEE).

Dayanand Meshram, Joint Director of DTE, revealed that DTE has received various recommendations and suggestions regarding changes in CET syllabus at par with the JEE. He further added that DTE has taken recent NEET chaos into consideration where the decision of implementing common entrance examination came at the very last minute. Hence, the decision relating to changes in CET exam pattern and syllabus will be taken earlier so that if the government implements common entrance examination for engineering, students will not suffer.

The main objective of changing syllabus and exam pattern is to help students prepare for the best and compete with the students of other states. DTE wants to ensure that the students should not suffer if there is a decision to have a common entrance examination for engineering in the future.

So far, the recommended changes have not been implemented as the final decision is with state government. If there are any changes, they will come into effect from the year 2018 as the process for MHCET 2017 has begun.

Proposed changes in MHCET exam pattern and syllabus:-

  • The exam would be tougher like JEE.
  • The questions will be asked from both Class XI & XII syllabus as JEE is based on the concepts taught in both the classes.
  • The students might get lower ranks/marks due to the changes in exam pattern, but still, they will get admissions.

However, the major challenge for implementing these changes is less number of takers for engineering seats in the state compared to a high number of seats available.
