The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) has given approval for the one-time capital grant of Rs. 456.10 core to Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras, IIT Kharagpur, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay. MHRD has approved the allocation of capital grant to these institutes under ‘Sabko Shiksha, Acchi Shiksha’ scheme.

The one-time capital grant will help these four older IITs to get rid of financial crunch. The developmental activities in these institutes were stalled due to the lack of financial resources. An official associated with MHRD revealed the fund allocation is purely based on the proposals sent by the IITs for developmental activities.
At IIT Madras, different expansion projects and developmental activities were put on hold due to the NGT’s order and delay in allocating funds.

Explaining the issues that are being faced by IIT Madras, Director of the premier institute, Dr. Bhaskar Ramamurthy pointed that the institute planned construction activities in 2014. As per the directives of the government, a detailed proposal was sent to MHRD for the allocation of funds, he added.
While approving the funds, MHRD stated that the allocation of the capital grant is not only for expansion projects but also for research and innovation.
IIT Kharagpur is planning to improve the infrastructure facilities to meet its strategic goals of new faculty, post-doctoral students and international students. On the other hand, the premier technical institute will accumulate new equipment for research and innovation.
