MHRD Awards 32 GIAN Courses to JMI, Highest in India
- Jamia Millia Islamia has bagged 32 Global Initiative of Academic Networks (GIAN) courses from the Ministry of Human Resource Development.
- Till now, JMI has emerged successful in conducting 23 GIAN courses in varied disciplines.
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), one of the best universities in the country has been awarded 32 GIAN (Global Initiative of Academic Networks) courses by the Ministry of Human Resource and Development. GIAN is a flagship initiative of MHRD, where JMI is the first university in the country to be awarded 32 GIAN courses. Faculty of Natural Sciences (JMI) alone bagged 10 GIAN courses.
Professor Talat Ahmed – Vice Chancellor of JMI mentioned that JMI is one of the best universities in India, which provides international exposure to research scholars, faculty members and students. The addition of 32 GIAN courses will further boost up the research scope of the varsity. He inaugurated a ten-day GIAN course titled ‘Cancer therapy through targeting mammalian DNA repair pathways’ on October 24, 2017.

So far, JMI has emerged successful in conducting 23 GIAN courses in different disciplines. International scholars in respective disciplines have visited the varsity and delivered lectures.
For the newly-launched 10-day GIAN course (as mentioned above), Professor Girish Shah from Canada will deliver a series of lectures on DNA repair pathways, DNA damages, DNA repair roles, Biochemistry and Genetics. Professor Shah has been associated with Laval University (Canada) as a full-time professor. He has been researching on cancer over the past three decades.

Addressing the gathering at the inaugural ceremony of 10-day GIAN course on Cancer Therapy, Professor Shah indicated that many people do not have an idea on possible ways of controlling cancer. Even though cancer patients might not be able to conquer the disease, they have the capability to manage it so that they do not die of it. He expressed his satisfaction 70 participants came forward to have a detailed insight of ‘Cancer Therapy’.
