MHRD Directs Universities to Organise a 'Unity Run' on Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s Birth Anniversary
- MHRD directed all the institutes of higher learning to celebrate the 142nd Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel on October 31, 2017.
- 'Unity Run' is one among the major events suggested by MHRD.
As per the official notice issued by the University Grants Commission, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development has informed all the universities or higher learning institutes across the country to organise ‘National Salutes Sardar Vallabhai Patel’ on October 31, 2017. All the higher learning institutes must celebrate the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel by conducting different events and programmes on the theme of unity. The events must reflect and exhibit Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s decisive efforts to unite a cultural and diverse country like India into a unilateral political, socio-economic and administrative entity for governance under independent India.

MHRD also suggested a list of events that could be conducted to commemorate Sardar Vallabhai Patel, a great ‘unifier’. The list of events are: -
- Felicitation of freedom fighters in the region, and recollection of Sardar Vallabhai Patel’s views on contemporary issues of unity
- Singing/ writing/ composing original songs on the unity theme
- A competition on designing caps and T-Shirts on the theme of unification
- Elocution and Essay Writing competition on the theme ‘Relevance & Importance of Sardar Patel in Contemporary India’
- Historical essay writing competition on the contribution and character of Sardar Vallabhai Patel with prizes
- Songs and Skits on the theme of unity with an award for the most creative theme
- Unity Runs – in rural areas, cities, towns by students with a message unified Bharat
