MHRD Encourages Varsities to Display Portraits of PVC Decorated Soldiers

With the introduction of the "Vidya, Veerta Abhiyan" suggested by the HRD Ministry, the Universities and colleges across the country will soon establish a “wall of heroes”.

The initiative has been started by the government to honour war heroes by displaying the portraits of soldiers who had shown exemplary courage in defending the nation against enemies. These portraits will be displayed on the Wall of Heroes introduced at educational instituted in India.

The initiative will be launched by the HRD Ministry today i.e., May 2, 2017, to encourage institutes to display portraits of soldiers decorated with Param Veer Chakra (PVC) – India’s highest gallantry award.

A senior official from the ministry informed that the portraits of PVC decorated soldiers will be launched by HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar today. These portraits will be put up in different colleges and universities.

The portraits will be received by the Vice Chancellors of IIT Delhi, DU, JNU and Jamia Milia Islamia. Other universities will also be called to follow suit. A campaign is also being launched to spread awareness within universities and institutes regarding the initiative.

The idea was initially propagated by a group of ex-servicemen who approached the JNU Vice Chancellor, M Jagadesh Kumar in 2016. The group proposed that the portraits of decorated soldiers and tanks used in wars should be displayed on campus to evoke a sense of patriotism and nationalism among the students.

The appeal soon reached the HRD Ministry and attempts have been made to bring the initiative on ground.
