MHRD Grants Rs.58 Crore to Tamil Nadu Universities and Colleges

The MHRD will be releasing Rs. 58 crores for improving the colleges and universities of Tamil Nadu. The infrastructure and research facilities of many colleges will be enhanced by this grant.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India has released a sum of Rs. 58.92 crores as part of a grant for improving the institutions of higher education in the state of Tamil Nadu. The allocation of this grant is done under Rashtriya Uchchatar Shiksha Abhiyan which has the objective of improving infrastructure, development of faculty, research and innovation and also upgrading degree colleges into model institutions.

Sixty percent of the entire contribution will come from the Centre. The parts of the funds are for equity initiative, faculty improvement, infrastructure grants to colleges and universities, innovation and research, vocationalisation of higher education, and also upgrading the existing colleges.

The highest amount has been allocated to infrastructure development and research and innovation. Several universities have benefited from this scheme. The Physical Education and Sports University and the Tamil University of Thanjavur will each receive an amount of Rs. 6 crores for infrastructure improvement. The Madurai Kamaraj University will get Rs. 1.05 crores for faculty improvement. Anna University, Annamalai University, Bharathiar University, Bharathidasan University, MKU, and the University of Madras will receive Rs. 4.50 crores each for career hub development and entrepreneurship.

Alagappa College - Karaikudi, the Government Arts College - Salem, and Presidency College - Chennai have been sanctioned Rs. 60 lakhs each for colleges and infrastructure, including Nandanam, Quaid E Millath, Presidency, Queen Mary’s, Dr. Ambedkar, and Bharathi Women’s College, Chennai. They have been provided with funds to develop vocational education. A total of nineteen colleges have been allotted Rs. 10.50 lakhs each for vocationalisation of higher education.

As per a letter received from the Principal Accounts Officer of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, the state of Tamil Nadu comes under General Category and the funds that are being released in the first installment are directed at improving management, evaluation, monitoring, and research component.
