MHRD to IIMs: Increase SC, ST and OBC Representation amongst Faculty

The Union HRD Ministry has written to all the IIMs asking them to roll an advertisement for the recruitment of reserved candidates for teaching posts. The step has been taken to increase the representation of SC, ST and OBC candidates in within the IIM teaching staff.

Sources close to the decision also added that the move was to ensure that reserved category candidates can apply anytime during the academic year. HRD Ministry’s letter also questioned the lack of action on the part of IIMs in ensuring faculty reservations.

The premier b-schools have also been directed to conduct a recruitment drive every year in order to fill up the reserved category posts. The ministry has also directed the institutes to send a report regarding the actions taken in this matter.

Many of the 20 IIMs in India have been delaying the implementation of the reservation policy. The institutes have said that the move might impact the quality of education imparted by the institutes.

The HRD letter points out that there has been no appreciable progress in getting more members from these categories in the faculty despite it being a constitutional obligation.

A senior HRD official has informed that the IIMs have been asked to provide an accurate analysis of the number of faculty members who belong to the SC, ST and OBC category. The ministry has also asked the IIMs to invite applications from candidates belonging to SC, ST, OBC communities for various teaching posts in the institutes.

In 2008, the government had asked the centrally-aided institutes including IITs and IIMs to form a quota for SC, ST and OBC candidates in teaching posts. The aim of the decision was to increase the numbers of such candidates and to help them in becoming prospective faculty members.
