MHRD: Untrained Teachers have 2 years to Qualify NIOS D.El.Ed Eligibility Criteria
- Parliament has passed a bill regarding the minimum education requirements of teachers.
- Untrained teachers will have up till 2019 to clear the minimum qualification under 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan'.
- Teachers will need to fulfil NIOS D.El.Ed Eligibility Criteria
The Parliament has passed a bill on August 21, 2017, regarding the minimum education requirements of teachers. According to the HRD Ministry, teachers who have not undergone the teachers training course and are teaching students of classes 1 to 8 will be given two years’ time to complete the course and fulfill the eligibility criteria.
The ministry has also stated that this is the last opportunity for candidates who have not done the training course to become eligible. The bill has been passed to ensure that the eleven lakh teachers appointed till March 2015 under the Right to Education (RTE) Act get enough time to qualify the eligibility criteria.
These untrained teachers will now have time up to 2019 to acquire D.El.Ed. (Diploma in Elementary Education) or B.El.Ed (Bachelor of Elementary Education) in order to keep their jobs as teachers.
NIOS D.El.Ed Programme has been designed to help aspiring teachers develop necessary skills, attitudes, competencies to successfully train young minds. Candidates can apply for the D.El.Ed. programme after passing class 12 with an aggregate of 50% marks. SC, ST, OBC and PH students can apply with 45% marks as well.

For candidates who have not secured the minimum qualifying percentage, improvement chances are available. Such candidates can register for NIOS Senior Secondary Course, under Stream 1 or on demand examination i.e. Stream 4. This course will be part of admission and maximum four subjects can be taken for improvement.
HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar informed that the teachers teaching classes 1 to 8 students under the 'Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan' have this last opportunity up till 2019 to pursue D.El.Ed course and become eligible. This chance has been given to teachers to prevent them from losing their jobs.

The Compulsory Education (Amendment) Bill, 2017 is yet to be cleared by the Rajya Sabha. According to the amendments made in the bill, teachers appointed as on March 2015 will have to acquire the minimum qualifications by 2019 in order to keep their jobs.
