Miranda House Installs Digital Talking Signages for Blind Students

With an objective to make the college campus disabled-friendly, Delhi University’s Miranda House has installed digital talking signages in the campus. The specialty of the device is that it helps visually challenged students of the college in figuring out their way across the campus. For this purpose, the college has put up a total number of 100 QR code acrylic sheets in various parts of the campus like hostel rooms, classrooms, and canteen. Pratibha Jolly, Principal of Miranda House revealed that the digital signs initiative would make technology more accessible to the visually impaired students.

For using the digital signs system, the student will have to download the customized app on their smartphone. The college has installed a 6-inch square scan code. The code is located at just one inch away from the wall. If a student comes three feet close to the code, a verbal message comes out that directs the students to track the location of the code.

Giving more details about the system, the Principal of the college explained that if a student wants to enter the canteen, he/she has to come close to the digital signage that was installed outside. As soon as the student comes three feet close to the digital signage, the code informs the students of the location of the entrance, and the number of steps he/she needs to take to enter the canteen.

Teachers and students have been playing a significant role in helping the students to install the app. Through this initiative, the college will facilitate a smooth student experience for the visually impaired students on the campus. The digital signage system will help the blind students to walk freely on the campus without anyone’s support. The technology adopted by the college will turn out to be a boon for the visually impaired students during the admissions.
