Mising Language Course Available in Dibrugarh University (DU)

Unesco has predicted that half of the world's languages would be extinct by the end of this century. It also states that around 2,000 out of the 7,000 official languages spoken around the globe have only 1,000 speakers or less.

Tabu Taid, noted linguist and founding president of Mising Agom Kebang, the apex literary body of the mising community in collaboration with Dibrugarh University (DU) launched a Mising language certificate course, which is a six-month long course at the Centre for Studies in Language (CSL).

This step was taken because 1 million people in Assam belongs to the Mising community.

The three Arunachal districts of East Siang, Lohit and Lower Dibang Valley also have a large Mising population. This step is going to benefit the second-largest ethnic tribal community of the state, Assam.

Tabu Taid inaugurated the course on 15th Feb’16, Monday and said “the move would go a long way in aiding the preservation and growth of the language”.

"Hundreds of languages are dying across the world for lack of preservation. Globalization has accelerated the process as commonly-spoken languages dominate the less common ones, leading to the latter's extinction. In our country, there is need of special legislation to protect and stabilize languages of indigenous speech communities," he added.

The director in-charge of CSL, Bhim Kanta Boruah, said that they have 57 candidates provisionally selected for the certificate course.
