The Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur has recently scrapped its allotment of seats under the quota of Socially and Educationally Backward Class (SEBC). The National Law University (NLU) will not be providing admissions under the SEBC category for the upcoming academic session of 2020-21.

This step was taken by MNLU Nagpur to follow the decision of the Supreme Court released last month for cancelling any reservation provided under the Maratha quota. While referring to the queries concerning the SEBC quota to a larger Bench, the Apex Court had discontinued the implementation of the reservation for jobs and admissions for this year. The Supreme Court had stated that it will not disturb the admissions that have been granted already but colleges and universities were directed to not offer fresh admissions based on this quota.

As per reports, a legal notice was sent to MNLU Nagpur after it released its first seat allotment under CLAT 2020. Under the first provisional admission list of the university, seats were offered under the SEBC quota. Hence, a legal notice was sent by two representatives of the NGO Youth for Equality, Sanjeet Shukla and Vishnuji P Mishra, in which the law school was notified of the same.

The notice was filed through Advocate on Record Pooja Dhar and it urged the National Law University Nagpur to release an amended provisional list in which the SEBC reservation was not incorporated. The notice directed the university to follow the Supreme Court's orders and not give admission to any student under the SEBC category.

Reports suggest that after the receipt of the legal notice highlighting this anomaly, NLU Nagpur subsequently did away with the same. The seats that were allotted under the SEBC quota in the first list were subsequently opened for general category candidates for allotment under the second merit list.

Maharashtra National Law University, Nagpur is one of the 22 NLUs that offer admission to law courses through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT). The law entrance exam has been conducted and CLAT 2020 results have also been declared. The counselling process of CLAT 2020 has been closed on October 15, 2020, closing admissions for all NLUs.
