On Sunday, 18th August 2019, the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University, and Supreme Court Judge, Justice Sharad Bobde announced the launch of a new course at the MNLU, called ‘Nyaya Shastra’. During a ceremony for the permanent campus of the MNLU, Bobde spoke up about the concept of establishing a new judicial academy which has been envisioned to work on the lines of the National Defence Academy (NDA).

In the statement that he released, he stated that the ‘Nyaya Shastra’ course will be brought in the Maharashtra National Law University in partnership with the Sanskrit University at Ramtek for both students and lawyers.

In his words, he states, the Indian Judicial System works based on the Aristotelian logic. However, the idea to bring forth the ‘Nyaya Shashtra’ was the simple vision to shed light on the “great science of logic” that has been illustrated in India. He added that the Muslim Scholar Al Farabi had brought forth the logic apart from Aristotle.

Justice Sharad Bobde speculated as to why Farabi’s logic was not taught in India, which could be the language barrier. He also stated that the Maharashtra National Law University is the first not only in India but in the world to pursue ‘Nyaya Shastra’ in its curriculum.

On the matter of producing judges alone, Justice Sharad Bobde said that they plan to follow the model used by the National Defence Academy (NDA). He added that after completing his/her schooling, a student will be pursuing his studies at the MNLU for a duration of 5 to 6 years. During his/her stay, the student will be guided and trained in all the aspects of becoming a judge, gaining experience and familiarising with the functions of a court and the court sessions.

Justice Bobde further stated that the Judicial Academy will bring forth top-class judges, who are qualified and worthy of handling any case in any court located in throughout India. Adding to the qualities of the academy, he stated that the academy will provide the Government of India a total of 50 judges every year. He stated that with the aim of developing a “highly efficient working force of judges”, the students will be provided jobs based on their merit.

When the new Academy is put in place and begin with its functions, it can be assumed that the set of judges that will come forth after completing the full duration of their course, especially in ‘Nyaya Shashtra’, will bring a new dimension and the court sessions will conducted with newer results being witnessed as well. However, things can only be contemplated until the Academy begins with its functions and fulfils its promises.
