More than 1700 Students Drop Out of IITs and IIMs in Last Two Years
A new drop out trend has been started at the top IITs and IIMs.
Landing an admission at one of India’s top institutes is a very desirable but tough. People who get to study in these institutes of national importance like the IIMs and IITs consider themselves lucky but not all students complete their term. According to study conducted by the ministry of human resource and development, it was found out that IIT Gandhinagar saw 42 students dropping out mid term. Similarly, at Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), nine students dropped out last year.

It was found out the total number of IIMs, students were dropping out from 11 IIMs. Also, IIM-A ranked sixth among these 11 IIMs.A total of 104 students dropped out of IIMs in the last two years and 9% of them belonged to IIM-A. It was recorded that 6 students dropped out of the institute in 2014-15, and three students dropped out the next year.
Similarly in case of top IITs, a higher number of students dropped out. It was recorded that in the last two years, 12 IITs saw a total of 1,782 students dropping out mid session. IIT-Gn constituted of 2.35% of the total drop outs with 27 students dropping out in 2014-15 and 15 students leaving the institute in the year 2015-16.

On discussing the same issue with Mr. Amit Prashant, who is also the dean of academics at IIT-Gn, he said that students might have left the institute because of the lucrative jobs that they had found while pursuing the programme.
Prashant said that students leave the institute mostly because they find a good job for themselves. Also, out of the total students studying in BTech, MTech, MSc and PhD programmes in the institute, only 5% of them dropped out.
