On March 15, 2019, Delhi University witnessed a memorable event as for the first time in the history of the University, a mother and daughter duo received their Ph.D. degrees together from Delhi University. Mala Dutta (56) was present with her daughter Shreya Mishra (Dutta) (28) in DU to receive their degrees in their respective fields of research. With the support of Shreya, Mala completed her dream of having a Ph.D degree 34 years after she stepped out of her college. The duo researched together in DU in different fields.
DU officials said the duo was present to receive their degrees as they could not make it on the convocation day which was on 19th November 2018, a day after Shreya’s wedding.
Mrs. Dutta who worked with the Defence ministry as Indian Economic officer always dreamt of completing her PhD degree after she completed her college in 1984. She completed her M.A. in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics.
Dutta informed that she had to take a break for her daughter’s studies in 2012. Then she took study leave from the ministry to complete her Ph.D. in Finance.
Shreya said that she took up Ph.D in psychology and thought they could make the moment historic by completing the degree together. She also worked hard under the guidance of her mother.
Dutta said that it was a wonderful moment for her to study with people of her daughter’s age in the college. She also said that she got a lot of respect from the professors she was working under.
