Some of the MPs of Rajya Sabha opposed replacing the Medical Council of India (MCI) with a medical commission. The proposal was made by Niti Aayog Panel. The lawmakers were not in favor of constituting a new body for MCI. They opined that the government could have a better control of the medical education regulator.

Naresh Agarwal of Samajwadi Party asked the Health Minister Mr. JP Nadda to take full control of MCI rather than dividing it into four parts.

Initially, the Niti Aayog Panel suggested that the MCI has to be divided into four boards which include UG medical education, PG medical education, registration and ethics, medical assessment and accreditation.

Mr. Satish Chandra Mishra of BSP party opined that the CBI has arrested the President of MCI, Mr. Ketan Desai on graft charges. There were no pending cases against the President. Mr. Ramesh of TDP questioned about any evidence of corruption in MCI.

Mr. Jairam Ramesh of Congress pointed that despite widespread corruption in MCI, it is not possible to clean up the regulator as there is a nexus between MCI and political establishment.

Mr. Nadda concluded that the government will consult all the parties before taking a step regarding MCI. The government will take the opinions of all the political parties into consideration and plan accordingly.
