Mumbai: Parents Demand Uniform Fee for Private, Deemed Medical Colleges

Parents demand a uniform fee structure for private and deemed medical colleges in Maharashtra. A delegation has been written to the Chief Minister of the state, Devendra Fadnavis asking the government to intervene in this matter.

The Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DMER) was expected to declare the fee structure on August 29. The fee structure of medical colleges have not been clarified yet and the students are supposed to start filling their choices from today, August 30.

Rui Kapoor is the parent of a medical college aspirant who said that DMER has not clarified the fee structure on the official website. As a result of this, they have not been able to make a preference list of colleges as they are unsure about their budget, added Rui.

The parents further demanded that the fees of deemed and private medical colleges must be normalized and there should be a common admission process for all the colleges across the state.

Troubled parents talked to the media and said that some colleges charge for to five times more than the government colleges. The fee charged by government medical colleges is up to Rs. 78,000. However, for the same course, a private college will charge from Rs. 9 lakh to Rs. 16 lakh.

The parents also said that some of the colleges are exploiting students by charging a ludicrous sum of money without a rationale behind the fee structure.

There are 6,205 medical seats in Maharashtra out of which only 2,810 offered by government colleges. All government colleges do admissions based on the result of MHT-CET scores.

However, admissions to the 3,395 seats — 1,720 in private colleges and 1,675 in deemed colleges — will be done according to the merit prepared on the basis of NEET scores.

Concerned parents also said that the private and deemed medical institutions don’t uphold transparency in the admission process. They are concerned about the seats that will be allotted to their children basis the NEET scores.
