Mumbai University Approves 22 New Colleges
- Mumbai University has given approval for 22 new colleges out of which six are located in Mumbai.
- These new colleges will start functioning from the upcoming academic session.
The University of Mumbai has given approval for 22 new colleges for the academic session 2018-19. With the addition of new colleges, the number of colleges affiliated to Mumbai University has gone up to 796. Out of the 22 new colleges, six colleges are located in Mumbai including two-night colleges, two arts, science and commerce colleges each, a law college and a women’s college. The rest of the colleges are located in the other districts across the state.
Mumbai University Management Council gave approval to the 22 new colleges on April 26, 2018. The list of new colleges has been sent to the state government for final approval. The state government is expected to give its nod by June 15, 2018.

Among the 22 new colleges that have been approved by MU, seven are law colleges, two-night colleges, two women’s colleges, an institute for hotel management and the rest are traditional arts, commerce, arts and science colleges. Considering the huge number of vacant seats in teaching training, architecture, management, engineering and pharmacy courses, the varsity has not given approval for new colleges that have applied to offer these courses.

In February 2018, the varsity issued Letter of Intent (LoI) to all the educational trusts that have applied to start various courses. The intent letter was issued only after these colleges satisfied the norms prescribed by the varsity and UGC.
As per MU’s perspective plan 2018-19, the target is to grant approval for 62 new colleges. However, only 22 colleges have made it to the final stage.
In 2016, MU approved 24 new degree colleges. Out of them, 10 were law colleges and the varsity did not approve any new professional colleges.
