Mumbai University Launches Master’s in Archaeology

The University of Mumbai has launched a Master’s course in Archaeology from the academic session 2017-18. The decision to introduce Archaeology course in PG level was approved by the Academic and Management Councils of the University. Mr. Sanjay Deshmukh confirmed that the two-year course in Archaeology would begin from July 2017. The total intake for this course is 60.

So far, the aspirants from Mumbai who wish to join Archaeology course in Mumbai had only one option, i.e., Deccan College located in Pune. Now, these candidates can join Mumbai University instead of going to Pune. The students who choose this course will have to study pre-history. The students will not study the ancient economic systems. During the first term of the course, the candidates will also study the archaeology of Southeast Asia.

One of the officials of Mumbai University revealed that the governing body of the varsity would decide the fee structure of the course. A separate department called Centre for Archaeology will be set up in the varsity under the Centre for Extra-Mural Studies.

In India, very few institutes offer a course in Archaeology. Nowadays the demand for the course has been increasing, and launching this course in a renowned varsity like Mumbai University will be an advantage to the aspirants who wish to pursue Archaeology. On the other hand, the varsity has also approved 60 seats for the course initially so that more candidates will have a chance to join the course.

The varsity will disclose details relating to the admission process, fee structure and the selection procedure soon.
