Mumbai University Likely to Recall Plan for Uniform Question Papers and Exam Time Table

Mumbai University is likely to reintroduce the system of uniform question paper and a common schedule for first and second-year exams. The move will come after the principals of several colleges affiliated to Mumbai University who have complained about problems and difficulties in conducting university exams for all three years of UG courses.
At present, the officials of the varsity are engaged in reviewing the decision taken by the Academic Council in May 2016. It is necessary to maintain a uniform standard across colleges since the credit system of varsity grades students for their performance throughout the course. Even though the system has its own benefits, the administrative problems faced by several colleges outnumbered the benefits.

An administrator of one of the reputed colleges felt that the varsity is conducting all the exams simultaneously across colleges because of which the assessment process can surely take a hit. The winter exams are currently underway being conducted in two shifts where teachers are staying in college simultaneously from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. After the completion of exams, the assessment process will begin and teachers will have to assess the final year exam papers online. Besides online assessment of answer sheets, teachers will have to assess the papers of first and second-year students manually, he added.

An official associated with a college affiliated to MU stated that the common timetable for first and second-year students might not work out as these dates will clash with other professional exams. Furthermore, colleges are even forced to adjust or suspend the junior college schedule so as to adjust the other exam dates. The second-year exams are scheduled for the afternoon session and the colleges that share infrastructure for degree and junior colleges have no other option except to cancel the junior college classes. Therefore, maintaining a uniform timetable for first and second year UG courses will sort out the issue.
Academic Council of Mumbai University will take a final decision in this regard.
