Mumbai University to Push State Government to Sanction New Colleges

The University of Mumbai (MU) is planning to get new colleges sanctioned for the academic session 2017-18. The university has granted permission for few colleges in the current academic session. Currently, the university is in the process of preparing an annual perspective plan, and it is trying to get approval for some of the colleges it had proposed last year. The state government did not approve these colleges this time. MU had proposed 65 new colleges for the current academic session, i.e., 2016-17 and the state government sanctioned only 24 colleges.

The perspective plan being prepared by the university focuses on university’s future growth. It also gives details about perspective colleges for different regions under the university’s jurisdiction. However, the state government has to give the nod for the perspective plan.

One of the members of the committee appointed by varsity said that the perspective plan is being prepared as per varsity’s requirement. However, the state government has its priorities. Hence, it is a two-way process. He revealed that the plan would include both - the pending requirements and proposal for few more colleges based on the research made by the committee. As per the research, the panel has stressed the need for higher education in more talukas under MU’s purview.

Among the approved 24 colleges in the current academic session, 10 are law colleges. Similarly, some of the colleges are from rural areas in Kokan region.
