Mumbai University to Set Up Virtual Classrooms in 40 Colleges Located in Remote Areas
Through this initiative, eminent field experts and academicians will be available to colleges that have limited resources and are located in far-flung areas.
The University of Mumbai is planning to set up virtual classrooms in 40 colleges affiliated to the varsity. The virtual classrooms will be used to replay live lectures by eminent personalities and renowned academicians. The initiative will help the students of those colleges that have limited resources.
M.A. Khan, Registrar of Mumbai University explained that the classes would be recorded at a virtual classroom in Kalina Campus. Later, the classes will be telecasted live to all the 40 colleges where the virtual classrooms are set up. The main aim of the varsity is to improve teaching quality in the colleges located in remote areas. The varsity has identified 40 colleges that need infrastructure assistance. Most of these colleges are located in Thane, Ratnagiri and Mumbai.

Through this initiative, eminent field experts and academicians will be available to colleges that have limited resources and located in far-flung areas. The varsity is bestowed with eminent academicians and is planning to invite dignified personalities for delivering lectures such as nobel laureates and industry experts who will share their knowledge with students through virtual classrooms.
The initiative taken up by Mumbai University is an expansion to the virtual classroom project that is currently used to deliver seminars, workshops and lectures. Around 400 colleges affiliated to Mumbai University located mostly in Mumbai are accessing the virtual learning tool.

For installing virtual classroom units in colleges, the varsity will incur a one-time cost of Rs. 3.5 lakh to Rs. 4 lakh. Thereafter, the colleges have to pay Rs. 1.2 lakh per annum to maintain the units. With an objective to facilitate the smooth conduct of the programme, the varsity has appointed an agency to monitor the programme.
